Speakers
• Kathy Masi, organizer of the Middle Village Glendale Coalition on Homelessness, said homeless is a big business in New York City. An example is the Cooper Ave. Westhab adult male center for at least 200 adults. Kitchen is made up of 3 microwaves and stacks of food in plastic containers. Stolen catalytic converters have been kept on site by some residents.
• Joan Harrison, homeless/unhoused; taught philosophy and classics at colleges and high schools for several years, emphasized that sleep deprivation and food are her major needs. Just like food stamp, she recommended a “sleep stamp” voucher program.
• Jim Trent, treasurer of Queens Civic Congress and the Creedmore Civic Association, explained how bed capacity used to house and care the mentally illed/disabled has been dramatically cut from thousands down to hundreds.
• Patricia Leonard, LSW mental health for 15 years, gave examples how the homeless shelter system run by the administration and corporations is so dysfunctional.
